Abstract
The older vineyards of the Azores have 3 main grape varieties: ‘Verdelho’, ‘Arinto dos Açores’ and ‘Terrantez do Pico’. These varieties are unique in the national context, without their ancient presence being registered in the Portuguese mainland vineyards. Although over time several hypotheses have been placed on the origin of these varieties, it is in fact unknown. In this work it is proposed, on the basis of literature review, that the hybridisation of varieties in the vineyards of the Azores is at the origin of the varieties ‘Terrantez do Pico’ and ‘Arinto dos Açores’, with ‘Bastardo’ as likely progenitor of the first and the ‘Verdelho’ as a possible parent of both. It is also discussed the origin of the ‘Verdelho’ grape variety and its link to several varieties of the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
